After the pastors' meeting in La Porte, IN, Sr. Lili Martinez, CSC and Fr. John Korcsmar, CSC gave a presentation at St. Adalbert's Parish in South Bend. The parish where Hispanics had been worshipping at (St. Stephen's, a Hungarian national parish) has been closed and torn down. The Hungarian and the Hispanic communities are now part of St. Adelbert's; Sr. Casimir's, although still a separate canonical parish, is served by the same pastor and staff.
Fr. Chris Cox, CSC, the pastor at St. Adalbert's, has been working on community organizing (among many other things!). Lili and John's presentation was on immigration and organizing. There was a good turnout of Holy Cross religious: Fr. Dick Laurick, Fr. Mike Couhig, Fr. John De Riso, Sr. Maria Luisa Guereña, Fr. Tom Smith, and others.
As an organizer, it is Sr. Lili's job to guide and critique the leaders. This means that Sr. Lili is the only (that I know of) Sister of the Holy Cross who is paid specifically to tell a Holy Cross priest (pastor, provincial, dean, diocesan director) what to think, how to think, and what to do. We all hope she does a thorough job.
The next day, John and Lili visited Sr. Mary Turgi and Sr. Ann Oesterreich at the Holy Cross International Justice Office and Sr. Mary Tiernan at the Vocations office. They visited with Sr. Pat Ann Thompson for morning coffee, and they also went over to the Holy Cross Media Ministries Office and visited with Fr. Steve Gibson.
A good time was had by all!!
